Grease Trap Maintenance

There are two parts to grease trap care.  There is a cleaning, and there is maintenance.  Every municipality requires that each grease trap be cleaned out at a regular interval set by the inspector.  The inspector wants to know that the grease trap box is cleaned out, scraped, and in working order, to keep fats, oils, and grease out of the waste water lines.  He or she wants to know how much grease, solid waste, and water is in the trap each time it is cleaned.

The maintenance aspect is more about keeping your business operating properly with the grease trap.  Does the trap stink up your building?  Does it have fruit flies in it?  Are there other bugs around it?  Is the seal working properly?  Iis the lid loose and a creating a liability issue?   These are all things that can impact your building and your business, but the inspector is not concerned with these matters.

Each grease trap cleaning, as required by the municipality, includes:

  • Removal and subsequent re-closure of grease trap lid (as access is provided by the customer)
  • Vacuum out of grease trap contents, as completely as possible
  • Scraping of as many walls and baffles inside as can be accessed
  • Spraying the trap to clean debris from the trap (as spray is accessible)

Additionally, each grease trap clean-out will note the following details on the ticket or manifest:

  • How is the trap cover?
  • Are inlet / outlets intact?  Are there leaks visible?
  • Is the baffle intact and unobstructed?
  • Are walls and bottom in good condition?

Your technician will do a thorough cleaning and inspection of your grease trap box.  They will describe any defects or deficiencies they notice, so you will be aware of them before your next inspector visit, and so you can understand any issues that might be affecting your business because of your grease trap.
